Make Your Own Whipped Shea Body Butter

In this tutorial, you'll learn how to make a basic, whipped shea body butter, which is one of the best moisturizers around for dry skin. The final result will have a lush, creamy consistency, just like butter. Most of the ingredients can be easily found at a health food shop, or you could shop online for the best buys. Pop it in a jar with a pretty label for the perfect Mother's Day present. Makes approximately 170g to 227g (6-8 oz).




  • 142g (5 oz) shea butter (any kind).
  • 2 tablespoons fractionated coconut oil (or any other lightweight oil).
  • 1 tablespoon jojoba oil (or any other nourishing oil).
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable glycerin.
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch (or arrowroot powder).
  • 1/4 teaspoon tocopherol (aka Vitamin E).
  • Cedarwood essential oil or other skin-safe essential oil or fragrance (optional).

Since we will not be adding any water to this, no preservative is needed. The shelf life is about four to six months.


  • Pyrex container (or other heat-safe container).
  • Electric mixer.
  • Spatula.
  • 1 apothecary jar (or any sterilised glass jar).
  • Pot for water.
  • Measuring spoons.

1. Combine the Oils

Step 1

Bring a shallow amount of water to a boil in a pot. This will be the first level of our double boiler system. While it's getting hot, proceed to the next steps.


Step 2

Weigh out 142g (5 oz) of shea butter and place into a heat-safe container. I like to use pyrex.


Step 3

Melt your shea butter by placing the pyrex container into a pot of boiling water and turn the heat down to the lowest setting. Heat slowly in the double boiler until the shea butter melts completely.


Step 4

Measure the liquid oils and add them to the melted shea butter. Stir well.


Note: You can substitute other oils for the fractionated coconut and jojoba oil, such as olive oil, sweet almond oil, or apricot kernel. I’ve chosen fractionated coconut and jojoba because they are known for easy skin absorption, but any liquid oils will do! Be creative.

2. Freeze, Then Mix the Oils

Step 1

Place the whole container into the freezer and let cool until a crust forms on top of the mixture. This takes approximately 10 minutes.


Step 2

Remove the container from the freezer and whip with an electric mixer. Since this is just a small container, one beater attachment will do just fine.


Step 3

Continue to whip until the mixture becomes completely opaque and begins to stiffen. Use the spatula to scrape the sides.


If this process is taking longer than five minutes, then you may not have let it cool long enough. Return to the freezer, wait a few minutes and try again.

If the mixture is too hard to beat, place it back in the hot water on the stove for a few seconds to soften until you can whip again.

3. Add the Final Ingredients

Step 1

While mixing, slowly drizzle in the glycerin and continue to beat for a few minutes to combine well. Glycerin is a humectant and will help to attract moisture to your skin.


Step 2

Add the cornstarch about one quarter of a teaspoon at a time. Mix your whipped shea butter in between additions. Cornstarch will help to incorporate the glycerin with the oils and will also help with skin absorption in the final product.


Step 3

Add the tocopherol, a natural vitamin E and an anti-oxidant. This will keep your oils from going rancid and will help to extend the shelf life. It is also very nourishing for your skin.


4. Freeze and Mix Again

Step 1

The next steps are optional for an even fluffier whipped butter!

Otherwise skip on to section 5.

Place your mixture back in the freezer for five more minutes.


Step 2

Take the mixture out and whip with the electric mixer on high for another two minutes. This additional freezing and whipping is what really gives you the fluffier consistency.

Feeling really ambitious? Repeat this section one more time for an outrageously fluffy and super-luxe body butter.


5. Finishing Up

Step 1

If you are adding essential oils or fragrance, now is the time. Add about four to six drops of your favorite essential oil or fragrance and whip one final time to incorporate well. I love cedarwood, lavender or bergamot.


Step 2

Using a spoon, scoop the whipped shea butter into containers and close tightly. Your whipped shea butter will remain soft as long as you do not let it melt.


You're Done!

Your whipped shea butter is ready to use immediately. Add a little bit of personality with a pretty label and it will make a lovely gift.
