Instructions to Make Pop Up Valentine Cards

Step 1: Trace and Cut the Card Base

Select a thick cardstock paper for the card base, which would be the inner layer of the card. Notice the lines I’ve traced on the card, these are to create the 3d layers. These lines (2 lines forming 1 strip) should be traced on both sides of the mid-folding line of the card. One side of the strip is for the height and the other side is for the distance of the heart pattern from the card. Keep the heights and distance of the 3 strips different, to make sure that the heart patterns are arranged nicely without overlapping each other. Cut slits along the lines using an x-acto knife.

Step 2: Prepare the Card Base

Measure the height and distance of each strip and then cut out 6 pieces of cardboard strips as per the measurements. Attach these strips on both sides of the 3d layer strips to give them a firm structure. Fold the card to check.

Select different colored cardstock papers and trace the heart shapes on them. Cut out the heart shapes and some strips from the cardstock paper.

Step 5: Attach the 3d Layer Strip

Attach the M-shaped strip with the big heart, near the bottom side and keep the closed end of the M facing up. Join the bottom open end of the M shape as well.

Step 6: Craft a 3d Heart Pattern

Place the small heart on the top of the big heart, attaching it with the closed M-shaped strip. This will give the heart patterns a 3d look.

Step 7: Craft the 3d Heart Patterns

Follow the same technique (of attaching M-shaped strips between hearts) to craft the rest of the paper heart patterns. Take the card base once you have all the heart patterns ready.

Step 8: Attach the 3d Hearts with the Card

Let’s start with the big heart pattern. Apply glue along the strips’ height part and then attach the heart pattern with the strip. Make sure that the strip isn’t visible and it is all covered with the heart in front of it.

Step 9: Attach all Hearts Shapes

One by one attach the rest of the heart patterns on the other 3d layer strips.

Step 10: Prepare Outer Layer of Card

Now, measure and cut another piece of cardstock paper (this time, a thin cardstock paper will do) slightly bigger than the card base piece. Select a cute or bright-colored cardstock paper for the outer layer of the card.

Step 12: Attach Card’s Closure

As the card has several cardstock heart layers inside, it won’t stay closed nicely. Cut out a piece of satin ribbon, long enough to wrap the card once and tie a bow knot. Simply, wrap the card once and tie a small bowknot in the middle of the card. And our Valentine’s Day Heart Pop Up Card is ready!

Tips for Beginners: Things to Remember When Making Pop Up Cards

Here are some tips if you’re having difficulty crafting the heart pop-up cards or any kind of pop-up cards.

  • Use papers of similar thickness for the inner layer and the inner patterns.
  • The lines traced on the card base are to form the 3d layers.
  • 2 lines form a strip, 1 strip has 2 parts on both sides of the middle crease.
  • Keep in mind that one side of the 3d layer strip is for the height and the other side is for the patterns’ distance from the card.
  • Use x-acto knife to cut the lines in slits. Do not cut all 4 sides of a strip.
  • The outer layer of the card should be either the same or slightly bigger than the inner layer.
